FEWACCI President Statement
Hajiya Saratu Iya Aliyu
Since December 2019, the world has been facing the outbreak of COVID 19 which was reported to be a pandemic by World Health Organization. The pandemic is not only affecting public health security, it has also caused economic shutdown. As one of ECOWAS private sector organizations serving as a platform for regional public private dialogue with headquarters at ECOWAS COMMISSION and privileged access to ECOWAS Heads of State and Government summit as observer to present private sector position on deepening regional economic integration, the Federation of West African Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FEWACCI) had called private sector actors in the region for a 2-day online meeting with view of drafting private sector position paper on common actions against Covid-19 to be presented to ECOWAS Commission and its relevant Authority.
The discussion was organized in conjunction with the ECOWAS Commission Department in charge of Industry and Private Sector Promotion and National Chambers of Commerce and Industry in Members State. FEWACCI were also supported by International organization like the Africa office of United Nation Organization for South-South Cooperation (UNOSC), the International Organization of Francophonie (OIF) .as well as volunteers from Other Africa region.
Two hundred and twenty two (222) participants joined this meeting with 19 leaving before the end of the second day. Only 43 participants introduced themselves and their names have been included in the minutes Given the difficulties posed by using the whatsapp medium, hosting a virtual live meeting with private sector participants and support of Consultants to moderate in all ECOWAS official Languages will be more appreciable.
On behalf of the FEWACCI and all private sector actors in ECOWAS Member States, I would like to thank all Presidents and Members for your robust contributions during the online discussion. I really appreciate their contribution on issues related to the impact of COVID 19 on our lives and activities. Your contributions will be used to fashion FEWACCI responses on the Action Against Covid 19.
I am calling on ECOWAS, the United Nations, Africa Union, European Union and their specialized institutions to involve in the implementation of the urgent recommendations and join FEWACCI to organize a large consultation meeting with all stakeholders promoting the inclusiveness of the private sectors in the management during and after Coronavirus pandemic.
I sincerely encourage private sector actors to take into account the preventive measures put in place in each Member States, to develop in their company or work
unit, a contingency plan to deal with the unexpected, to protect and support their employees, because it goes without saying that any social and health threat always has an impact on the economy.
I would like to use this opportunity to thank and congratulate the Governments, health professionals and public safety officers for their dedication and selflessness in dealing with any threat related to COVID-19.
May God protect us and our Business.
